Dear Society,
As I enter the new year, I find myself with a newfound priority of health as I’m sure the bulk of society has.
Being a young woman of color my health concerns are persuaded by statistics that seem to be against my subset demographic. While women’s health is typically an afterthought and commonly misdiagnosed by the other gender, the health needs of African Americans are typically dismissed or taken far too lightly.
Bogus misconceptions of emotional distress or pain tolerance have led the healthcare for black women to be on average poor.
With this, my priority as I enter the new year is to take my health into my own hands. Not to the extreme of disregarding professionals. But more so becoming far more intuned with my body. Listening to it. And most importantly, treating it and thinking of it as the beautiful being that it is.
